Career Prospects

Biotechnology has become one of the most fast growing sectors. People with a degree in biotechnology find good scope in planning, production and management of bio-processing industries, specialized biotechnology companies or biotech-related companies such as pharmaceutical firms, food manufacturers, aquaculture and agricultural companies as well as research laboratories. They may also find good career opportunities in areas such as research, sales, marketing, administration, quality control, breeders, technical support etc.

Alternatively, students can also pursue an MBA and enter the management sectors to become Corporate Executives in biotechnology industries. In the agricultural sector, biotechnologists are required to improve agrarian practices and improve agricultural output using various methods of biotechnology such as genetic engineering and tissue culture.

After graduation, biotechnologists can also work in government based entity such as universities, research institutes or at private centres as research scientists/ assistants. Some government organisations include National Biotechnology Board (NBTB), The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), Biotechnology Consortium of India Ltd (BCIL), and Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO).

In the past few decades in India, major growth has been seen in the areas of agricultural biotechnology, animal husbandry, bioinformatics, bio fertilizers, diary development, bio-resource development, marine biotechnology, genetic research, drug development. At the international level, the graduates in biotechnology from India, find scope in countries like United States, Europe, and Australia for their graduate studies and employment. Biotechnology has worldwide scope in terms of research.
