The sudden demise of our Former Vice-Chancellor Col. Prof. Dr.N.Ramachandran, is a great loss to the education fraternity and the PMIST.

Col. Prof. Dr.N.Ramachandran, obtained his B.E., and M.E., Degree from Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli. He had done his Ph.D Research on the Thesis “Technical Study on Thanjavur Fort” with high commendation from Indian and Foreign Examiners.

He started his professional career as instructor in Valivalam Deshikar Polytechnic, Nagapatinam in 1981, appointed as Head of the Department in Periyar Centenary Girls’ Polytechnic, Vallam in 1984, joined as Vice-Principal in 1992 and as Principal in 1994 of Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, Vallam. He rose as the first Vice-Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University in 2007.

He served as Vice-President of Indian Society for Technical Education, Advisory Committee in Society for Educational Technology, Research and Development, President of Periyar Consultancy Services, Director of Periyar Research Organization for Biotechnic and Ecosystem, Chief Executive Officer of Periyar Technology Business Incubator, Founder Chairperson of Computer Society of India, Thanjavur Chapter, President of Clean Thanjavur Movement, Vice-Chairperson of Computer Society of India, Trichy Chapter, Director of VIBGYOR Graphics Research Centre Limited, Chennai, Board Member of Construction Industry Development Council, Member of City Level Monitoring Committee in National River/ Lake Conservation Programme in Thanjavur City and Advisor GM Institute of Technology R & D Centre, Davangere, Karnataka.

He has served as Member in Academic Council and Syndicate of Anna University, Chennai, Member of Senate and Advisory Board in Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli. Also nominated as Member of working group of Environment and Climate Change of Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission for the formulation of 12th Five year plan, Expert Member by Ministry of Environment and Forest to appraise the constructional project and industrial estates for environment clearance. The Government of India bestowed him the Honorary rank of “Colonel” in the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards such as WEC-IIEE-IAEWP Environment Award, Best Citizen Award, Best ISTE National Chapter Chairman Award, Bharatiya Vidhya National Award for Best Engineering College Principal, Bharath Rathna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Award and Best Engineer Award by the Institution of Engineers (India), Tiruchirappalli.

He has obtained grants from Canadian International Development Agency for conducting Women’s Environmental Programme, established Periyar Centre for Environment and Energy Management, Periyar Renewable Energy Training Institute in the Campus. On invitation from Ministry of Rural Development, he made a presentation about Periyar PURA at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Under his able leadership, the University has fabricated the innovative simulators POEMS & PITS for Indian Air Force.

On the Invitation of the Russian Government, he visited Moscow and Siberian Regions as Member of high level delegates headed by Dr.A.Sivathanupillai, Distinguished Scientist, DRDO. He delivered lecture on Periyar PURA to the students of IIM Ahmadabad and Indore along with former President of India Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. He attended the Global Engineering Education submit at Singapore and attended Global Engineering Deans Council Conference in China.

Born in a small village in Thanjavur District, he had his Schooling in Rural Environment, and rose up to the level of a renowned Vice-Chancellor, by his untiring hard work and dedication. The University is proud to place on record the achievement of Prof. Dr. N.Ramachandran in the field of technical education as a whole and in particular, the contributions made to Periyar Maniammai University.
