A Sustainable Oasis of Learning and Innovation

PMU campus has around 4,500 shrubs and plant varieties, 26,000 native trees and endangered trees. Such thick foliage of vegetation releases oxygen of 8.4 tonnes per day and CO2 absorption is around 1.6 tonnes per day. Alternative building materials like hollow blocks, interlocking blocks, paver blocks are manufactured in the campus using innovative technologies to meet its own infrastructural requirements.

Periyar Paper Re-processing Unit is available for Paper recycling. Sources for the paper recycling unit are retrieved from our University and reinforcing materials (cotton waste) are added to strengthen the quality of the paper. The University always keeps pace with the shifts in technology like transition from fluorescent lamps to CFL and now to LED. International 5R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) concept on Solid Waste Management is practiced here.

No Vehicle Day At PMIST

In an effort to promote road safety and reduce the pollution caused by the vehicles, the Institute decided to observe “No Vehicle Day” from 14.02.2020. The initiative was proposed to create awareness among theStaff and Students on pollution control and to promote the usage of Public Transport. PMIST is continuously implementing various pollution control measures and this initiative was particularly adapted in controlling Carbon Emissions. Information related to Carbon emission control was disseminated among the Students and faculty prior to this implementation on 14.2.2020 “No Vehicle Day”was observed. Staff and students participated and supported wholeheartedly with a in depth understanding of role of vehicles generating carbon emission

All students and faculty came as pedestrians, by bicycles or by public Transport services. This has sensitized the public also in promoting a culture of using the public transport. It is decided that once in alternate months a day would be dedicated to green commute and contributing to nature. Around 65 cars and 520 two wheelers have been prevented from plying in the roads, thereby reduced the traffic congestion during the peak hours of the Thanjavur city. Steps are ongoing in making the estimate of reduction in the carbon emissions with the effort of this initiative. PMIST feels happy to be pioneer in successfully promoting this kind of initiative for the first time in Thanjavur City.

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology is provided with walk friendly pathways which encourages people to move safely within the campus. Roads are well maintained with green plants on either side to feel the pedestrians happy and comfortable during walking. Entry of automobiles is restricted inside the campus.
