History

Rooted in the ideals of Periyar, the institution was founded with the primary goal of women's emancipation through education. We strive to enhance women's participation in social, national, and global development by providing access to higher education in Science and Technology. Over the years, we have grown steadily, expanding reach and continuing to uphold our commitment to academic excellence and societal progress.

  • 1988Founding & Visionary Beginnings
    • The Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women was established by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society, Chennai.
    • Named after the social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Thanthai Periyar) and his wife Annai Maniammaiar, it became the first Women's Engineering College in the world, aiming to empower women through education in Science and Technology.
    • Initial affiliation was with Bharathidasan University, with approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
  • 2001Affiliation with Anna University
    • The college transitioned its affiliation from Bharathidasan University to Anna University, Chennai, continuing its focus on women's higher education and technological advancement.
  • 2007Deemed University Accrediation
    • On August 17, 2007, the institution was recognized as a Deemed to be University under the name Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology.
    • The status was granted with approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Human Resources Development, New Delhi.
