Student Election Council

In line with the UGC directions and recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee report we ensure strict compliance of the orders of the Hon'ble Supreme Court for the conduct of student council elections as per the guidelines. The student council election of Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (PMIST) is conducted in a democratic way every year during August and the student council members are elected based on the Academic / Curricular / Co Curricular and other performance of the representatives of all the classes / Section and department of the University.
Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology encourages the students to develop skills of good governance. Hence, these elections are organized to help them practice these skills and learn the skill of representation. Hence, the students have an experience in the skills of democratic representation and participation. As per PMIST norms, Students' Council is to be established every year during the first term and has to elect six representatives in various positions. (Two Advisors from final year, Chairperson and Vice-chairperson from third year, Secretary and Joint Secretary from second year).

Student Council Election Procedure
Eligibility
Undergraduates between ages 17 and 24 can contest. Although no academic criteria have been prescribed for the candidates to contest, however, they should not have any academic arrears in their election year. The candidates must be elected as a class representative by his/her class students. Candidates should have the minimum attendance of 80 percent. Candidates will not have criminal records i.e. they should not have been tried and/or convicted of any criminal offence or misdemeanour. They would also not have been subject to any disciplinary action by PMIST authorities. Candidates must be regular, full time students. The candidates violating this rule will be disqualified.
Class Representative Election Procedure
The election officer/Class in-charge can conduct the election. On the date of election, election officer shall go to the class room and ask for the nominations to be made on the spot. The election officer has to make sure the eligibility condition of the candidates and then writes the names of the contestants serially on the black board. Ballot papers are signed by the election officer and will be issued to the students. After that the election officers have to ask the voters to cast the vote. The voters have to write only one candidate's name on the ballot paper. After all the voters present in the room have cast their votes, the election officer asks them to settle down quietly while the ballots are taken out and tallied. If a candidate has obtained maximum votes, he/she is declared as the winner.
Mode of Elections
As per the J.M.Lyngdoh committee recommendations, the direct elections to be conducted in Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology.
Frequency of Elections
Election is to be held annually and will be conducted within six weeks from the start of the academic session. The entire election process, from the date of filing nomination papers, campaigning and declaration of the results, should not exceed 10 days.
Code of Conduct
No candidate will indulge in, nor abet, any activity, which may aggravate existing differences or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic groups or groups of students. Criticism of other candidates will be confined to their policies and programmes, past record and work. Contestants will refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life not of other candidates. There will be no appeal to caste or communal feelings for votes and places of worship will not be used for electoral propaganda. No printed posters, pamphlets will be allowed and only hand-made material will be permitted at places notified by the authorities. Defacement or destruction of property of the university will not be permitted.
